Kaushik is a 7th-grade student and attends Hornsey College at Bathford Estate, Dickoya. His father is working as a machine operator at a company in the Colombo district. When his father is away from home, he stays with his mother and grandmother. His mother doesn’t go to work and takes care of the household work and Kaushik when his father is not there. The low monthly income earned by Kaushik’s father is the only source of income they have. That meager salary is not enough to fulfill their daily expenses as they have to spend money on the medication of Kaushik’s grandmother as well as on Kaushik’s education.
